Langtang Circuit (Ganja La Pass) Trekking

Langtang Circuit (Ganja La Pass) TrekkingExplore the upper reaches of the scintillating Langtang Valley.  The challenging crossing of the exciting Ganja La Pass through remote Sherpa and Tamang villages in the delightful Helambu region.

The Langtang region is closer to Kathmandu and a little less populated than other trekking destinations in Nepal. We take you to the Langtang Valley that lies just south of the Tibetan Border. Your trek starts from the village of Dunche, walking on the open and fertile valley. Nepal's national flower, the Rhododendron looks amazing with the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and photo opportunities on this trek are endless. You will see and hear a multitude of birds and might be able to spot other wildlife such as Wild Boar and Languor monkey. As you move up the valley you will notice the Tibetan influence in the villages and lifestyle of the people. The ascent up to Tserko Ri (4,984m) is a challenging climb, however it offers some of the most spectacular Himalayan views and the mountain passes are overpowering, which is a definite highlight of the trip! Another option is to undertake a shorter walk up to Kyanjin Ri or walk further up the valley. The pristine Gompa at Kyanjin is set in midst of the Himalayas and the views from all directions are phenomenal.

Our relaxed itinerary allows for two days at Kyanjin where we you are able to acclimatize yourselves to higher altitudes as you trek up to Langshisha Kharka for a glimpse of Tillman’s Col and the peaks near the Tibetan Boarder. You might also be able to climb Tserko Ri a relatively easy trekking endeavourer, which offers unrivalled views of the high summits.

After Kyanjin Gompa you will spend the next few days trekking over the magnificent Ganja La (5400m. /17712ft), a challenging pass situated on the flank of the Naya Kang (5846m. /19175ft) where high camp is set up on grassy meadows at the foot of the pass before you make the crossing. The last few meters of ascent to the prayer flags on the pass require a modest amount of scrambling, though it is not difficult at any stage. Fabulous views of the Ganesh and Jugal Himal peaks greet you as you traverse across to the delightful Helambu region. Gentle trekking through pleasant Sherpa Villages provides a relaxed conclusion to your journey.

Day 07 & 08: Kyanjin Gompa - Langshisha Karka – Kyanjin
After breakfast we follow the sandy path east past the government Tibet lodge and through the yak encrusted meadow. Cross a stream running through a moraine of snow-white boulders. Walk down the hill beyond to the flat valley floor passing roofless yak herders huts. This flat area must once have been the bed of an ancient lake and the hill you just walked down is an alluvial fan. It’s so flat you could build a bowling green down here. Pass a waterfall on the left and a hillock on the right with a chorten on top and huts on the far side.
At Langshisha Kharka are some yak herder’s huts, and a large red rock, which is said to be stained by the skin of the first yak to visit these parts. Its lama owner skinned the yak died but the yak skin stuck to the rock on which it was laid to dry. You can also see near here two rock pillars, near the east Langtang glacier, said to represent the Buddhas Padma Sampa and Sakyamuni (The Buddha).
Next day return journey back to Kanjin Gompa.

Day 09,10, 11 &12 Kanjin - Ganja La - Tarke Ghyang
From Kyanjin the route crosses the sparkling waters of the Langtang Khola and climbs through mixed pine and rhododendron forests to a campsite on a small terrace high on the southern flank with a splendid outlook into the glaciated upper Langtang valley with its imposing peaks of Langshisa Ri.

Our attempt at crossing the Ganja La was thwarted by a snow-covered boulder field. Although we could see the prayer flags fluttering on the cool only a few hundred meters ahead it was not possible to make further progress. Every step was a lottery - an insecure foothold on an ice-glazed boulder or an abrupt, potentially leg-breaking, plunge into a void between boulders.

Day 13: Tarke Ghyang -Kutumsang
We descend through a forested area and climb through a dry river-bed to arrive at a Kharka that is surrounded by rhododendron forest. Several time ascending and descending several times. After Bagan Ko Dhara, we descend continuously to arrive at Kutumsang (2460m).
